The Privilege of Representing Policyholders

Updated: Jul 18

I'm attorney Inge Johnstone. I am a policyholder lawyer and am proud to be one. Policyholder lawyers represent people and businesses against insurance companies, but more importantly, we help protect and restore the dreams, livelihoods, and homes of our clients. In today's world insurance is so important and our world can be a very dangerous place. So much is riding on the promise of the insurance company. It may be one's home or the fate of the company or a valuable property or the life of a loved one. The stakes are high. When insurance companies keep their promises, the crisis is averted and people can get back to living their lives.

Why We Buy Insurance

Our policyholders buy insurance so that they have a safety-net in the event of a calamity. After all, insurance is supposed to deliver peace of mind and protection from calamity. When a person has an insurance claim, they are at their weakest. They are at their most vulnerable and they already probably are having one of the worst times in their life. That is the time when we have the privilege of being able to help them.

It's Hard Being A Policyholder Lawyer

Being a policyholder lawyer is hard. Most lawyers don't want to do it. It takes a lot of work and sometimes the odds are not very good. The insurance companies have a lot of money and resources and attorneys that work for them sometimes think they can use those things to push policyholders around. While I genuinely believe that most people who work for insurance companies are just normal folks trying to do the right thing, the system has become hyper-focused on insurance company profit instead of the protection of policyholders. This focus puts pressure on these good people to do bad things.

Insurance companies also have very powerful lobbying groups that lobby state legislators, Congress, state departments of insurance, and other regulators. They influence lawmakers to pass laws favorable to the insurance industry. Unfortunately, many of these laws attempt to shelter and protect the insurance industry from the consequences of wrongfully denying policyholder claims.

Why We Thrive on Representing Policyholders

Against these odds, why do we represent policyholders? Because we exalt at the chance to be able to help our clients. Because we seek to challenge and to overcome difficulty. We embrace the struggle because we know that if we can convincingly show the truth, we can protect the community and maintain a level playing field. We can help ensure that policyholders are treated fairly and that their claims or paid on time. When their claims are paid, we want them to be fully reimbursed for additional time and expense and frustration and worry that they have to suffer because of an insurance company foot-dragging or non-payment. We also want insurance companies to be held fully accountable and regulated so that they write easily understandable policies and pay claims fully and fairly. This is why we are honored to be policyholder lawyers. Please let us know if we can help you.
